Tree City USA Is Right Here In The Triad - Winston-Salem
The North Carolina Forest Service named Winston-Salem as the state’s Tree City USA of the Year for 2017. The award comes thanks to the city’s efforts to promote and protect its urban forests, and to educate homeowners and utilities on how to maintain trees properly. Nine North Carolina municipalities were eligible for the award from receiving a Growth Award last year from Tree City USA, which encourages communities to participate in activities that recognize environmental improvement, encourage higher levels of tree care, and strengthen the community’s involvement.
Finding your way in Kannapolis gets easier
The City of Kannapolis has installed a Wayfinding System to aid residents and visitors as they navigate around and explore locations of interest within city limits. Current signage throughout the city needed to be replaced due to aging, use of the previous city logo, different colors and sizes. The new system creates an easily recognizable comprehensive and cohesive system for residents and visitors.
Bees becoming buzzword in Raleigh planning
Raleigh is commonly known as the City of Oaks, but now it can add the nickname Bee City USA to the list. As a designated Bee City USA, Raleigh has committed to creating sustainable habitats. City staff are now intentionally creating habitats for the buzzing creatures. The 75-acre sunflower field along the Neuse River Greenway is an example. City planners have also kept bees in mind while building the new Union Station downtown.
A new way to get to Crowders Mountain
A new shuttle bus system, geared to begin operating July 22, is aimed at reducing auto congestion and overflowing parking lots at Crowders Mountain State Park. Nearly 800,000 people visited the park in 2016 and Lead Ranger Kelly Cook expects that mark to be eclipsed this year. The horde of visitors means parking areas at the park fill up early on the weekends. The shuttle bus system, a partnership between the park, the city, the state park system, and the Federal Transit Administration, is aimed at reducing such gridlock at the parking areas and allowing more people to enjoy the park without the hassle of hunting for, and possibly not finding, a parking space.
